Tongkat Ali Benefits and Dosage: What to Look for Before You Buy

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a root native to Malaysia, Indonesia, and other parts of Southeast Asia, traditionally used to support energy, stamina, and healthy testosterone levels in men. It's become one of the more talked-about men's health botanicals in recent years — and also one of the more confusing to shop for, because of how differently brands label potency.

The trap: comparing milligrams instead of extraction ratio

This is the most important thing to understand before buying Tongkat Ali: raw root powder and a concentrated extract are not comparable on a milligram-for-milligram basis. A product listing "1,000mg" of raw root powder can contain far less of the active compounds than a product listing "200mg" of a 200:1 extract. Look for the extraction ratio (written as something like 100:1 or 200:1) on the label — that number tells you how many kilograms of raw root it took to produce one kilogram of the extract in the bottle, which is a much better indicator of potency than the milligram count alone.

Standardized markers

Some of the more rigorously made products standardize to a specific compound, eurycomanone, or state a percentage of glycosaponins. Not every brand discloses this, but when it's on the label, it's a good sign of a more carefully produced extract.

Typical dosage

Standardized extracts are commonly dosed at 200mg to 400mg per day. Products vary — some in our lineup are dosed higher because they use a lower extraction ratio (closer to the raw root end of the spectrum), while others use a small amount of a highly concentrated extract. Neither approach is automatically better; it comes down to matching the dose to the extraction ratio.

Combination ingredients

Several Tongkat Ali products are sold as blends — commonly paired with Tribulus Terrestris, Fadogia Agrestis, or BioPerine (a black pepper extract added to improve absorption of the other ingredients). These aren't inactive fillers, but they do mean you're evaluating a formula, not Tongkat Ali in isolation — worth knowing if you want to isolate its effects specifically.

Who should avoid it

Tongkat Ali is not recommended for anyone under 18, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or alongside hormone-sensitive medical conditions without medical guidance. As with anything affecting hormone pathways, it's worth a conversation with a doctor before starting, particularly if you're on other medication.
